What Is Performance Max?
Performance Max (PMax) is Google's fully automated campaign type that runs across all Google channels — Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover, and Maps — using a single campaign. You provide the creative assets and conversion goals, and Google's AI handles placement, bidding, and targeting automatically.
When Performance Max Works Best
PMax performs best when you have strong conversion data, high-quality creative assets, and a clear conversion goal. It's ideal for e-commerce businesses with product feeds, service businesses with enough conversion history, and advertisers who want full-funnel coverage without managing multiple campaign types.
"Performance Max is powerful when fed good data. Without sufficient conversion history and strong creative, it will waste your budget while it learns."
Asset Groups: Your Creative Foundation
In PMax, you build Asset Groups instead of traditional ad groups. Each Asset Group contains your headlines, descriptions, images, logos, and videos. Google mixes and matches these assets to create the best-performing combination for each placement. Create separate Asset Groups for different products, services, or audience segments for better relevance and reporting.
How to Feed PMax the Right Signals
PMax relies heavily on your audience signals and conversion data to find the right customers. Add your customer lists, website visitors, and high-intent audience segments as signals. The more relevant your signals, the faster PMax learns and the better your results.
Always connect your Google Merchant Center feed if you're running e-commerce. PMax with a product feed (Shopping) significantly outperforms PMax without one.
Monitoring and Optimization
PMax provides limited transparency compared to Search campaigns, but you can still optimize it. Check the Insights tab for top-performing asset combinations. Review the Search Terms insight to see what queries are triggering your ads. Adjust your asset groups based on performance data and add negative keywords at the account level to block irrelevant traffic.
Is PMax Right for Your Business?
PMax is not a replacement for well-structured Search campaigns. I recommend running dedicated Search campaigns for your highest-value keywords alongside PMax. This gives you control over your most important terms while letting PMax find incremental opportunities across Google's full network.
